Jersey photography

Who is David Ferguson?

Photographer & President of the Channel Islands Surfing Federation

I started my career working as an assistant photographer to local commercial pro photographer, Joe Bates. After working in the commercial world I then joined the Jersey Evening Post in 1987 completing the NUCTJ Photojournalism course at Stradbrook College, Sheffield, in 1989.

I then gained valuable work experience at the Guardian Newspaper in London with Eamon McCabe as Picture Editor. I have stayed at the Jersey Evening Post from my joining day realising city life was not meant for me, travelling and surfing when I can, and visiting my friends all round the world seeking new adventures and new destinations.

I have been also fortunate to have been sent on numerous assignments for the JEP all over the world covering, International sporting events, the humanitarian refugee crisis in Albania, Ethiopia, the Middle East, to Tiger shark tagging in Oahu, Hawaii and Channel Islands commercial interests overseas.

Photography has always been a passion for me starting in the film and wet chemistry era through to digital using a range of film and digital cameras and lighting set ups. I have a display of pictures at Sands, Five Mile Road, The Salty Dog  and The Golden Sands Hotel , St Brelade's Bay that showcase images taken over the decades depicting local Jersey scenes.

My other passion is surfing, a sport I have been doing for many years and am the current President of the Channel Islands Surfing Federation .

This has been an influencing factor and an inspiration to many of my photographs. I am also an Ambassador for Ocean Culture Life, a group of like minded individuals who are striving to make a change within the Ocean community delivering ethical solutions through captivating story telling. Ocean Culture Life
