Albania Humanitarian Mission

1992 / 1993

Post Revolution and collapse of Communism within the region.

Albania in the early 1990's saw the end of 30yrs brutal communist rule with the departing government systematically destroy the country and deprive its people of all basic needs resulting in poverty, crime and collapse of its infrastructure. The people who had been brainwashed to hate the west were then suddenly at the mercy of western aid agencies and companies seeking to tap into Albania's rich mineral deposits and oil. As the country struggled to get onto its feet the Balkan crisis erupted causing more destabilisation in the region. The images show how the change had an effect on its stricken people especially its children. I documented Humanitarian Aid being delivered to targeted areas that were most affected in and around Tirana, the transfer of Jersey cow bull semen to Berxulla Village and the construction of a toilet block for a girl's school in Gjirokaster.
