Jersey Fishing
Day to Day life on the Sea.
A visual record of life at sea for the Jersey Commercial fishermen who have not only have had to deal with extremes in weather, the affects of Brexit but now the Covid-19 Pandemic. With the closure of Jersey's Restaurants and Hotels due to the the pandemic, Fishermen have resorted to selling fish and shellfish on the beach and working on solutions to maintain livelihoods.
The need for change to keep the whole Fishing fleet operational is of paramount concern and one that the local Government are aware of. In conjunction to this its the responsibility of all ocean users to protect this precious resource and environment for future generations to enjoy.
Fishing in the Granville Bay Area is administered by the The Granville Bay Treaty. This Treaty is a trans-boundary management framework between the Jersey and French governments. It provides for shared fishing rights and management over the Granville Bay area (outside the exclusive three mile limits) and divides the area into management zones. The Granville Bay Treaty is principally managed by Government of Jersey departments rather than the Port of Jersey. The Granville Bay Treaty is now however all but null and void in the Post Brexit world as new trading deals, fishing licenses and new fishing limits between the UK, the Channel Islands and the EU are worked out.
