Mini-Transat training with Julian Adamson

WHILE many people have been con- fined to their homes this year, one Jersey sailor with a thirst for adventure, is pre- paring for one of the greatest challenges of his life. And while sailing across the Atlantic may not be on everyone’s bucket list, for Julian Adamson it is a long-held dream which is about to become a reality.

Having got his first taste of the sea in Laser Pico dinghies while a pupil at St Michael’s School in 2004, Adamson went on to attend sailing academies both in Switzerland and the UK, participating in many offshore races.

He is now preparing for the Mini- Transat 2021, a single-handed race across the Atlantic split into two stages, with the first taking him from Sables d’Olonne (France) to Palma (Canaries). He will then leave Palma, bound for Guadeloupe, to complete the second leg.

After completing his RYA British Keelboat Academy training sessions, Adamson turned his attention to qualifying as a chartered accountant but maintained his passion for sailing and was able to purchase Mini Skippy in 2019.

Inspired by many transatlantic sailors the image of all the yachts moored in Jersey for the Tour des Ports de la Manche created a lasting impression for Adamson.

Speaking about his forthcoming challenge, he said: ‘The sea is intense, the sea is real. It demands honesty and responsibility and, although not always hospitable, and sometimes downright hostile, it provides the treasures of freedom, peace and beauty.’
